About The Foolish Generalist
Hi, Matt here.
Somehow you've landed on this blog, despite me being neither famous nor especially successful. Weird.
What's this about?
Being a generalist here in the mid-21st century is a profoundly foolish thing to do. The name of the game is to specialize, maximize and monetize.
Be that as it may, thinking like a generalist is a powerful thing – especially in an incredibly complex and rapidly changing world. It means to step back, try to understand the similarities and connections between seemingly different things, and work to see the world as a whole in which the most interesting and valuable insights don't fit into a neat category.
Anyway, this is all just to say that I find a lot of stuff interesting, and I want to share what I find with other folks.
Who's this for?
First and foremost, it's for the interesting people I've met on my journey. If you're here, there's a good chance that's you. I'd like to create a little bit of community between myself and you folks (which, incidentally, is one of the topics I want to write about). Maybe you’d even like to write something here.
So I'm doing things a little differently than the typical substack.
Most importantly:
If I know you, please reach out and I'll make you a subscriber for free!
Mostly this just lets me keep the comments and chat high quality by enabling them only for subscribers. I'll be thrilled if you take a moment to make a comment, or share what you've been thinking about in the chat.
Did you just happened to stumble here and are curious? Well, I'm not going to try to convince you that Ia subscription will deliver good value for money, but I'm not going to stop you either. I mostly aim to make what I write public, but I may share early drafts with subscribers first for feedback.
Who is Matthew Hine?
Mostly I'm an engineer and system architect who's gotten to build a lot of cool stuff.
I also do photography.
And a little open source netradio software.
And some custom lego design I guess?
If you're into following, I'm on (of course) substack, instagram, threads, linkedin, and (grudgingly) twitter.
